Super 12 2003 Round 1 Roundup
posted 23rd Feb 2003
I'm a happy Rugby supporter - Super 12 is my favourite yearly rugby competition, and it is
wonderful to finally be able to watch some quality Rugby on the Telly! To me, Super 12 signifies the start of the year's
Rugby season - months of footie to come! Cool! This year's Super 12 will be really important to follow as well as players from
Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand will be desperate to impress so that they can secure their country's guernsey for the RWC later in the year.
Round 1
Good to see the Bulls have a win! In Bloemfontein they managed to beat the Cats 34-26. Seems though that Dries Scholtz - the big centre for the Bulls,
damaged his knee and he'll be out for at least 4 weeks. In Cape Town the Stormers downed the Sharks 40-18 - Cats' captain AJ Venter is in strife after being cited
for a head butt on the Stormers' Robbie Fleck and he'll have to face the judiciary early in the week to find out his fate.
Over in the shaky isles, the Highlanders were victorious 29-16 over the Chiefs in a game that consisted mainly of penalty try kicks from the Highlanders' Willie Walker.
The Crusaders beat the Hurricanes at Jade stadium, but the new look Hurricanes played a good solid game, and it wasn't until halfway through the second half that the Crusaders
appeared to be on top of the game. Hopefully there'll be some good things coming from the Hurricanes this season!
Closer to home, the Waratahs were downed by the Auckland Blues in a match that I'd rather not talk about - sure it was wet and slippery, but the number of handling errors made
my Under 8s team look good in comparison. I'm sure the Waratahs will pull their socks up though in weeks to come, and the Blues deserved the win. In Brisbane, my two favourite teams
went head to head - and when Chris Latham scored a try within the first minute of the game I was hopeful that maybe, just maybe, the Reds could pull a win at their home ground.
The Brumbies though don't go down easily nor often, and they came back to sneak victory 22-19. Julian Huxley, standing in for injured Elton Flatley, did some awesome kicking early in the match.
Watch out for this young man people - I have the feeling he's going to be around for a long long time.
Lots of players jumping on planes for next week - I'll catch you then!
