November 2 Match

WHAT'S HAPPENING? (posted 3rd November 2003)
There were no surprises in the England vs Uruguay match at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane last night with England annihilating Uruguay 111-13 in front of more than 46,000 fans. The predicted win means that England will face Wales at Suncorp stadium next weekend in the quarter finals.

Josh Lewsey scored five tries - equalling Chris Latham's record from last weekend, and Iain Balshaw scored a couple, as did Catt and Gommarsall, and Robinson - boy that guy can run fast! Luger, Abbott, and Greenwood also notched up five pointers for the poms. Grayson slotted 11 conversions and Catt popped two over for England to reach the 111 total. Uruguay only managed to score one try, coming from Lemoine, and the try was converted by Menchaca who also kicked a couple of successful penalty goals.

The minnow team of Uruguay tried to make a game of the clash, however their mid field defence was virtually non-existent allowing the English players to stroll straight on through again, and again, and again.

Iain Balshaw, who scored his two tries in the first half was stretchered from the field not long into the second half with a leg injury. No doubt England will be praying that the injury isn't too serious! The match soured in the last few minutes when England's Worsley was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for a high tackle. On his way to the bench he applauded to the crowd - the English supporters cheered him, but everybody else gave him a good dose of boos! Woodward has already apologised on Worsley's behalf - but it does little for England's desire to lose the 'arrogant' tag. I guess they can keep telling everyone they're not arrogant.....
