RWC Ticketing - Hard to Please!
posted 5th Feb 2003
Okay, well at this stage of proceedings, ticketing to the RWC seems to be the hottest topic for rugby fans. I've been hearing a lot of criticism about the ARU's ticketing allocation system,
particularly in relation to the pool match games - I have even heard the system referred to as the 'ticketing debacle'!
Personally, I didn't apply for tickets to 'all' of the pool matches in Brisbane - my closest World Cup venue, but I did receive tickets to the pool match games that I requested. Yay! Whether or not we will have any luck in the prime match draw remains to be seen,
and I will be very disappointed if we miss out, but them's the breaks! Either way, I am happy that I will have tickets to the three pool games, I will get to see France play - what an awesome side they can be when they're on their game, and I will be seeing my beloved Wallabies play on October 18. 'Good for some' I can almost hear the muttering, but
what some people need to realise is that it is only fair that members of the rugby community got first crack at the ticket allocations. In this household of five members there are two coaches and three rugby players. We got cable TV so that we could watch the Super 12 series! We spend one afternoon a week, and our Friday nights at training (I do believe that's the official 'I have no life' measurement)
and Saturdays are spent at Rugby fields for games.
We are not alone! Across Australia there are thousands and thousands of rugby players, and there is a large amount of people who make up the rugby community - the players, coaches, managers, referees, volunteers, parents of junior players, club administrators, committee volunteers and club ball boys and girls. Surely,
the members of the Rugby Community deserve to have preferential treatment in the ticket allocation system! We should reward the people who support the game day in day out, year in year out. Without the support of the rugby community, then the game would not be
anywhere near as the popularity it enjoys. Without the army behind the players, the game would not exist. So yes, in my opinion, the ARU deserves a huge pat on the back for their ticketing allocation system for the RWC 2003.
